"Mélisande" is an elegant vintage cameo ring, crafted in the early 20th century from 18-carat yellow gold (750/1000) by a French jeweler. It features at its center an oval onyx cameo, hand-carved to reveal the delicate profile of a young woman set against a pearly bluish background. The finely crafted settings gracefully highlight this portrait.

The cameo is one of the oldest relief engraving techniques in jewelry history, inherited from ancient Greek and Roman times when it already adorned jewelry and precious objects. Carved directly into the stone, often in materials with contrasting colors like onyx, it reveals a light motif standing out against a darker background, the result of meticulous work by highly skilled engraver artisans. Highly prized in the 19th century, notably under the influence of Empress Eugénie and Queen Victoria, the cameo experienced a resurgence in popularity in the early 20th century, worn as a ring, pendant, or brooch as a symbol of refinement. Even today, it captivates with its unique and timeless character, each piece being the result of irreplaceable artisanal expertise.

Early 20th-century cameo rings embody the discreet elegance and romanticism of the Belle Époque, a period when women loved to wear small sculpted portraits as narrative jewelry. Comfortable for everyday wear thanks to its low yellow gold setting, "Mélisande" charms with its timeless character and sentimental value. A true collector’s piece, it stands out for the delicacy of the engraved decoration on the settings, which enhances the central portrait.
